205 Bar is a lower east side live music venue. Located in the world of Chrystie Street, it straddles the dark world between the lower east side and Chinatown. Part of the allure of the 'dark world' is, oddly enough, that it is dark. How could hipsters and wannabees gravitate to a place where the street lights were turned on and the glare of a commercial street screams, "We're all here!" This is the Chrystie Street allure . . . and the charm fades once you hit 30.
Like many bars, restaurants and entertainment spaces in New York City, 205 Bar is owned by folks who also own other places. In the case of 205 Chrystie, the owners' pedigree also includes ownership of the Kenmare Street Mexican Tequila Bar known as La Esquina. The bouncers there have a reputation for being heavy handed, volatile, combative and thuggish. Since 205 Bar and La Esquina are members of the same family, there are reports the doormen at 205 Bar can also exercise myopic judgment in this regard.
